Neither Chris Watson, nor the Touch label itself seem particularly compatible with the 7" vinyl format, and yet here, in all it's beautifully presented (and more to the point beautifully cut) glory is this magnificent, limited edition release, exclusive to the format. A virtuoso in the medium of field recording, Watson offers up two recordings of the "voices and rhythms" of the Humboldt current associated with the Galapagos Islands, both using hydrophones. The resultant sounds meet with the usual superlative standards of this man's work. There can be few sound recordists who are so consistently able to reintroduce the natural world to a listener in such a fresh, magical way. Common to all Watson's work is a sense of something wondrous, even uncanny about the way environments and wildlife are presented, whether his subject matter be the motion of a glacier, the gloomy habitats of Highland Scotland, or beasts roaming the Kenyan plains, he always manages to surprise the listener with his vivid acousmatic portraits. The two pieces here are no different: A-side '3m' and B-side '10m' (presumably denoting how far the microphones were submerged beneath the currents) offer a glimpse into an otherwise inaccessible sound world, all rendered with astonishing clarity and texture on this excellent piece of vinyl. Superb. (boomkat.com)
